LEVEL planning long-haul flights from Vienna

The low budget subsidiary airline of British Airways is planning to expand its network of long-haul flights fmor Vienna, Austria. This will put it in competition with other long-haul airlines such as Norwegian. LEVEL airline was chosen in order to expand the network of long-haul flights further. Other budget airlines which have launched include: Eurowings, Easyjet and Wizz Air. LEVEL airline currently flies to 14 destinations in Europe, such as Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca.

Low-cost airline Level Commences Short-haul Routes

From 17th July, IAG is expanding its new airline Level into short-haul routes, providing low-cost flights between Vienna and European destinations: between Vienna - Palma, Vienna - London Gatwick, before new routes to other destinations such as Barcelona, Malaga and Paris commence in August.

Level was established in 2017 to offer low-cost long-haul flights, joining a similar airline such as Norwegian.

But IAG said today that Level would expand into the short-haul market where it will compete with Europe's biggest low-cost carrier Ryanair.

Austria has become the new front line in the battle between low-cost carriers after the collapse last year of Austrian airline Niki, part of bankrupt Air Berlin.

The freed up space in the Austrian capital Vienna, from the collapsed Austrian airline Niki, and has allowed budget airlines EasyJet, Eurowings and Wizz Air to launch or add services.

Low-cost Spain flights move to SFO from Oakland

Level Airlines to add nonstops to Barcelona

IAG’s Level subsidiary will move its flights across the bay from Oakland to SFO in October

Level, the low-cost affiliate of British Airways and Iberia – all are subsidiaries of parent International Airlines Group (IAG) – plans to shift its Bay Area Barcelona flights from Oakland International to San Francisco International this fall.

Starting October 31, Level will operate two winter season flights a week to Barcelona from SFO with a 288-passenger A330-200 equipped with premium economy and regular economy seating.

IAG created Level to compete head-to-head against low-cost transatlantic specialist Norwegian, which started flying from Oakland to Barcelona in summer of 2017 – about the same time IAG did. Oakland is Norwegian's gateway of choice in the Bay Area, and it also flies to Barcelona from Los Angeles International – another route where Level now flies on a seasonal basis.

But two months ago, IAG's Iberia subsidiary launched new service from SFO to Madrid, and Level's move there will keep the Spain service from the two sister companies in the same airport.

So far, Level's only U.S. routes are to Barcelona from the Bay Area and LAX, but the fledgling carrier is adding more A330s to its fleet with plans to base a third plane at Barcelona and to bring Paris Orly into its transatlantic network. Level will fly from Orly to Newark and Montreal, as well as the French islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe in the Caribbean.

Norwegian also flies from Oakland to London Gatwick, and last year IAG jumped into that route as well -- not with its Level subsidiary, but with British Airways. BA's other Bay Area London flights operate from SFO and San Jose to Heathrow, not Gatwick.

British Airways has also been converting some of its 777-200ERs to a higher-density configuration to compete with low-cost competition like Norwegian from London Gatwick, and it will put the aircraft onto some U.S. routes later this year. The three-class 777s will have 32 business class seats, 52 in premium economy and 252 in regular economy. They'll fly once a week to Gatwick from Ft. Lauderdale starting September 13, daily from New York JFK beginning July 8, once or twice a week from Orlando as of May 11, and twice a week from Tampa starting June 7.

The Spanish airline plans to keep two A330s at its Paris Orly base,  which will operate on the following services:

  • to Montréal, three times a week from 2nd July 2018
  • to Pointe à Pitre, Gudeloupe, four times a week from 3rd July 2018

British Airways to offer new basic fares on long-haul routes

British Airways, the parent company of Level Airlines, have announced that passengers will now have to pay to check luggage on some long-haul routes. A new “basic” fare has been introduced for passengers who have only hand baggage, with tickets costing up to £60 less than the standard return fare, the airline said. Basic fare tickets went on sale on Wednesday for flights from London to Austin, Boston, Delhi, Denver, Dubai, Hong Kong, Oakland, Philadelphia, Punta Cana and Singapore. The cheapest fare – to Dubai – will cost £143 each way. Passengers will still be served complimentary food and drink and be able to take two items of hand luggage on board. But checking a bag for people flying on basic fare tickets will cost from £80 return, with seat selection starting at £20 each way. BA already offers this type of basic fare on its short-haul flights.
