About Maya Island Air

Maya Island Air (also known as Maya Airways) is an airline with its head office in Belize City Municipal Airport in Belize City, Belize.

The airlines operates regular scheduled flights to over 10 destinations within Belize and chartered flights to Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras. Its main base is the Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport.

Maya Island Air was founded in 1962 originally as Maya Airways. In 1989, Island Air began providing similar airline services to San Pedro and Belize City. The need for air services grew therefore Maya Airways and Island Air planned a negotiation to merge and eventually become the most successful merge in the travel industry. In 1997, both airlines had merged to create Maya Island Air.

Maya Island Air hold 13 aircraft in its fleet, offering scheduled services in Belize, Guatemala and Honduras.

 


 

Maya Island Air Baggage

There are certain limitations to the size and amount of carrying capacity and baggage.

Carry-on Baggage

Maya Island Air permits each passenger one (1) small personal item, one (1) carry-on weighing 15 lbs or under and one (1) checked bag weighing 50 lbs or under. 

The permissible carry on size accepted includes but is not limited to (purses, small backpacks, brief cases and the like) with a maximum weight of 15 lbs. Due to limited cabin space, all carry-ons must fit snug under the seat.

Checked Baggage

Each passenger is allowed one checked bag with a maximum weight limit of 50 lbs. and 62 linear inches (27" x 21" x 14"). These will be placed in the storage bay below or to the rear of the aircraft. Anything larger, heavier or oddly-shaped may incur additional fees.

 

Excess Baggage

Excess and oversized baggage will be evaluated, charges assessed, and will be transported on a space available basis. All baggage must be checked in at the Maya Island Air front desk and have a numbered baggage tag provided by the handlers.

Measuring almost 9000 square miles, the country sits between Mexico, Guatemala and the Caribbean Sea. The country has many natural wonders such as the Belize Barrier reef, which is the second largest in the world, as well as the Great Blue Hole, the largest Sink Hole in the world. Belize is the only country in Central America that considers English its first language, although Creole and Spanish are also spoken as well as many other indigenous and international languages.

Maya Island Air are promoting special fares for the Easter weekend, including flights to destinations such as San Pedro, Dangriga and Placenia. They have also updated their plane imagery to feature the fantastic Hawksbill Turtle, an honour to their abundance in Belize thanks to dedicated conservation efforts.

Maya Island Air have announced the launch of Caribbean Culture and Lifestyle: Belize edition. They aim to be the leading authority on all things the Caribbean through sharing inspiring travel culture and lifestyle content in the region. The magazine will not only be available on planes but in select hotels as well. The magazine is set to publish five editions a year.

Tropic Air and Maya Island Air suspend flights to Caye Caulker

Tropic Air and Maya Island Air have issued a statement informing the public of the suspension of all scheduled flights to the island of Caye Caulker effective October 1, 2017.

According to the release, the present state of the runway at the island’s airstrip exhibits severe deterioration, and as a result, this precautionary measure is necessary to avoid safety and operational challenges beyond acceptable margins for public flight service.

“This information has been shared with the Belize Airports Authority and Caye Caulker’s Village Council accompanied by a request for urgent renovation of the runway in order to meet the island’s approaching tourism high season,” the release further states.

Air service will resume to Caye Caulker immediately after completion of necessary renovation works to rehabilitate the island’s airstrip.

Travellers with itineraries, reservations or tickets to Caye Caulker should contact their respective carrier for information regarding the status of the journey and available alternatives to reach this popular island destination.
